390 The Sculptures

At the present, clay sculpture is the medium I am finding the best way to express the ideas that grow in my subconscious.

The works have progressed from a purely realistic start to a now more Surrealist attitude.   From original idea to finish each piece takes on a character of its own.    The later pieces reflect my interest in ancient history, mythology and things arcane.

All sculptures are available as limited edition castings.

Black Madonna

77 cm Varied Castings

This  piece became such an entity in it's own right.  Nearly ten years from original idea to completion a lot of  life and learning went on in the meanwhile.  When it was finally began in earnest the piece, not me dictated what was relevant or necessary.

The original concept was an earth displayed with the South Pole on top to  acknowledge the greater Universe in which we live. By changing the attitude of the planet I may be able to express the need for our human condition to look beyond regionally held beliefs.   I have always disliked the down-under terminology for my home, Up, Down, North, South are not relevant in the bigger universal picture.

The piece consists of three zones

  • The Base - Crystallization, Creation, Genesis

  • The Earth - Perspective, Balance, Symbiosis

  • The Tree - Life, Knowledge, Justice

The Elements is a continuation of the same theme that created the Black Madonna.  An interest in the arcane and the energies that surround our very existence.   My criteria was to represent these in a sculptural form and to have each piece contain the element that it signifies.   I have incorporated runic script to acknowledge the history of the human interest in the forces of nature.
